What it will help with

  • Stuck for ideas? If you're longing to write but don't know how to find an idea or get the story going, the workshop will give you everything you need to get started – and you'll actually start writing.
  • Wrangling a story? If you're wrestling with a recalcitrant section of your story or novel, these essentials will help you resolve the most frequent story problems.

Practical questions

What's an online workshop like?

Very lively! It's held on Zoom, and packed with activities, games, discussion, and snippets of writing.

Do I need to have a work in progress?

No: you'll create a story in the workshop. If you do have a work in progress, you can then apply the same principles to that.

Do I have to share my writing?

No. You'll have the chance to say how you found a particular exercise or share a bit of you wrote; you can choose what you prefer.

Will the workshop be recorded?

No, but there will be a prerecorded replay, so if you can't make the live workshop, you can still do it in your own time.

Will I have my video and audio on?

Yes: the workshop is very interactive and you'll be chatting with other students in small groups and joining in whole-group discussions / feedback. If you have connection issues, it sometimes helps to turn video off to save bandwidth, but generally it's friendlier if we can all see each other.

Will we get notes?

Yes: you'll get a booklet by email, with everything we've covered in the workshop.

Behind the Workshop

The Essentials of Storytelling workshop began life as a taster session to encapsulate 12 years of teaching creative writing. I wanted something that would work for total newbies and also help my most experienced students.

I chose the core essentials which everyone needs for stories to work and which I return to most often in my own novels. I added some deeper info on narratives which none of my other courses or workshops cover, chose the practical creative techniques which are the most universally useful, and included my best tips for the process.

I look forward to sharing it with you!
